TikTok Live Shopping. What Asia has been doing since 2016 and why 2027 will be the German year.

TikTok Live Shopping is selling via livestream directly in the app. A host presents products live, viewers ask questions in the chat and buy through TikTok Shop without switching apps. In China this model has been a mass market since 2016. In Germany it has been available since the end of March 2025 and has been gaining real momentum since 2026.

It started in China. Almost ten years ago.

In 2016 Alibaba launched Taobao Live. The idea was simple. Sellers show products live on camera, answer questions in real time and sell straight out of the stream. What began as an experiment became the biggest shift in online retail since the smartphone. By 2020 more than half of China's livestream commerce ran through Taobao Live. Then the short-video platforms took over. Douyin, TikTok's Chinese sister, reached a merchandise volume of around 3.5 trillion yuan in 2024, roughly 490 billion US dollars. China's total livestream commerce stood at around 800 billion US dollars in 2024. Depending on the source, a fifth to a quarter of Chinese online retail now runs through livestreams.

The stories behind these numbers are pop culture by now. Austin Li, known in China as the Lipstick King, sold 15,000 lipsticks in five minutes and moved over a billion US dollars in a single Singles' Day pre-sale. No German TV channel has ever come close.

Why it works. And why it is not Instagram.

Anyone who confuses live shopping with social media as they know it from Instagram misses the decisive difference. Instagram is a shop window. Brands post, followers watch, buying happens somewhere else. The path from post to cart runs through links, browsers and checkout pages, and people drop off at every step.

TikTok Live Shopping is not a shop window but a sales floor. Three mechanics make the difference.

First, distribution. TikTok does not distribute content to followers but to people who are interested. The algorithm serves a livestream to people who care about the product category, whether or not they follow the brand. Reach does not have to be built over years. It is earned fresh with every stream.

Second, real time. A host answers the question about fit, shows the product from every angle and reacts to the chat. That replaces what online retail has always lacked. Advice. The numbers show the effect. Live shopping reaches purchase rates of 9 to 30 percent, while classic e-commerce sits at 2 to 3 percent. People who buy in a livestream also return goods far less often. Industry data points to around 40 percent fewer returns.

Third, checkout. The purchase happens in the app, in the moment of the stream, with a few taps. No channel switch, no link in bio, no waiting.

Germany is next. The numbers after year one.

TikTok Shop launched in Germany on March 31, 2025. After a good year, over 25,000 merchants are active, around 15 percent of German online shoppers have bought via TikTok Shop at least once, and the platform already ranks among Germany's 15 biggest online retailers. Perhaps the most important insight debunks the biggest prejudice. 37 percent of revenue comes from buyers between 46 and 66. More than from Gen Z. TikTok Live Shopping is not a youth phenomenon. It is teleshopping with an algorithm, and it reaches exactly the audiences that have buying power.

Why 2027 will be the TikTok live shopping year.

The German market is following a curve other markets have already been through. The UK launched in 2021, the US in 2023. In both markets the first year was about building, the second about professionalization, and from year three the profits went to the brands that had developed formats, hosts and routines early.

Germany is now at the transition from stage one to stage two. The infrastructure is maturing. The commission structure has been stable since January 2026, the merchant base is growing, the creator pool is learning the format. At the same time competition is still manageable. Most German brands test single streams at most, hardly any run live as a permanent channel. That is exactly the window that closes in 2027. Once the big players shift their budgets, the head start of the early movers turns into a deficit for the late ones.

Whoever wants to harvest in 2027 has to sow in 2026. A channel that gets better with every stream needs months of data, well-rehearsed hosts and proven formats. That cannot be bought, only built.

What brands should do now.

  1. Test while attention is cheap. A single professionally produced live session shows within weeks whether product and format fit together.
  2. Plan repetition instead of one-offs. Live commerce rewards consistency. One weekly show beats four scattered single streams.
  3. Treat the shop as part of the channel. Offers, product pins and timing decide conversion during the stream, not afterwards.
  4. Take a position now. The question is not whether live shopping is coming to Germany. It is here. The question is who claims their market first.
